Mechanical Skate Board II

 A similar figure was featured here on BPA back in 2014, as one of the earlier figures I picked up. Since then I've been keeping my eye out for the girl version and finally came across her 10 years later, as part of a lot that included the blue figure below. Like the recently featured clown and bear, these 2 figures were made in Hong Kong (the red 88 boy was made in Taiwan). I believe early incarnations of this design were made in Japan with a tin body (all featured here have plastic bodies).

 

Mechanical Skate Board Clown

This skateboarding clown appears to be from the same company as the recently featured windup bear, and presumably from around the same time (late '70s). He's made in Hong Kong and features some great artwork on the package. Check him below with the bear and the similar windup boy.

 

Mechanical Skate Board Bear

This wind-up skateboarding bear by Prestige was made in Hong Kong and is very similar to the Mechanical Skate Board figure. He's most likely from the late 70s. In addition to the boy and this bear, I've also seen a girl and a clown.

 

Baby Baby

Baby Baby from the Little Bobdog world, featured in figure form here on BPA last week and pin form a bit ago. This wind up figure was released in 1999 by 7-Eleven.

 

Bart Simpson VIII

Bart returns on a wind-up skateboard in this 1997 Subway kid's meal toy. I've picked up a lot of Bart toys recently and I'm curious why so many toys have Bart in a blue shirt.

Donald Duck IX

Donald returns for a 9th time, this time as a Japanese figure on a wind-up skateboard from 1988. This seems to be 1/2 of a 2-part set with Mickey (last week's entry).

Mickey Mouse V

Mickey Mouse back for a 5th time. This time as a larger Japanese figure on a wind-up board from 1988. Stay tuned for the Donald version next week! Check the Disney tag for more Mickey, Donald, Goofy, etc.

Troll Doll II

The previous troll that appeared on BPA was from Russ which seemed to be the main manufacturer in the US for a bit (according to Wikipedia there were some copyright suits that eventually restored the original Danish manufacturer as the sole copyright holder). This guy is one of the many knockoffs that were ubiquitous in the '90s when these things were last popular. This dude looks like he is ready for some beach party action on his wind-up board. The front truck actually rotates to give him a bit of a random trajectory.

Snoopy V

Snoopy's 5th solo appearance is a wind-up figure made by Aviva sometime in the '60s or '70s (the same company that made the 2 Peanuts sets linked below). This Snoopy originally came with a ramp that resembled a slide more than an actual ramp. Winding Snoopy up starts him pushing, but each push only moves him about a quarter inch. I'm not sure he would actually make it down the ramp without eating it.

Mechanical Skate Board

The "Mechanical Skate Board" is a plastic wind-up toy from Taiwan. There is no date but judging from the artwork on the box this guy must be from the late '70s / early '80s. When wound-up #88 will move forward propelled by the 2 large blue wheels in the center of his board while his arms oscillate constantly. Periodically a piece will raise him slightly on one side causing him to spin around somewhere between about 180 and 360 degrees and start him in a new direction. Unlike the last wind-up figure on BPA, this guy has his wind-up knob located a bit lower so it comes out of his legs.

Portia Porcupine

The Get Along Gang was a series of characters created by a greeting card company in 1983. You don't normally think of greeting cards gaining all that much traction but they apparently got big enough to get their own cartoon for one season in 1984. I have no recollection of this cartoon but these guys remind of the Shirt Tales, which was a pretty banal cartoon but aired on Sunday mornings, a time when I would watch any animated show no matter how terrible. 

This character is Portia Porcupine, whose character trait is apparently "gets upset easily." The figure is from 1984 and was part of the Fun Wheelin' Wind-Ups series. Various figures were sold with the skateboard, which is detachable and held on by the standard tab/hole-in-the-foot (see Montgomery Moose below). The front truck pivots but the wind-up mechanism is broken so I'm not quite sure if she rides in circles or just turns randomly.

Kid-a-Long Kids

Tomy Kid-a-Long Kids wind-up skateboarder from 1979. This little guy likes to ride pretty far back on his board. For some reason his creators decided to put the wind-up wheel in a "very uncomfortable place." After winding up he rides for a little then does a wheelie and turns a bit. His wheels don't have any grip so it doesn't work very well.
