Bugs Bunny Nite Lite

Bugs Bunny in nite lite form from 1994. The bulb in this is almost unbelievable weak. Glow-in-the-dark figures are brighter. Anywho, Bugs is wearing shades in case I can figure out how to get an LED light in there.

Donald Duck VI

Donald's 6th appearance on BPA comes in a bit of an unusual form - a bandana. I'm not sure when this is from but I'm going to guess the '90s based on the colors and background pattern. This has yet to make it into my pad bag to go under my helmet but it will soon (just as soon as I remember where it ended up).

Previous Donald appearances: a PVC figure, a bendy figure, an enamel pin, another enamel pin, and another PVC figure.

Jake

Quick yard sale find, photographed but not purchased. He's holding a board held on by velcro but there is no way for him to hold his feet on (like real life I guess). What's going on with his huge watch? Apparently this is a "I Can Dress My Doll (And Myself!)" doll.

Scooby Doo II

Scooby returns in puzzle form. This is the first puzzle to make it to BPA! Scooby never seem to look quite right on a board but he looks better than usual here. Looks like he's pulling a bean plant. Scooby's last appearance was as a keychain figure.

Baby Gonzo II

Baby Gonzo returns from his stint in South America in this pic from a Muppet Babies book. Not only is he rolling but also juggling some shaped blocks. Quite a feet for an adult Gonzo let alone the baby version. This image is on the inside of the cover and has nothing to do with the rest of the book.

Snoopy VI

It's great to be an expert. Snoopy appears here for the 6th time here solo (and he has 2 more appearances as part of a Peanuts set). He definitely wears the crown for most skateboard-related merchandise pumped out. This time Snoopy is riding on the side of a milk glass mug. It's dated 1958 but that is just the character - I'm not sure when this mug is actually from.

Honker

Honkers are mostly nameless muppets from Sesame Street. Their horns honk when their noses are squeezed, which I think is their sole form of communication. This guy is from a set of foam alphabet letters that I originally intended to give to my nephew until I saw this dude. I found this set at Goodwill and it was missing a couple letters already so my nephew will just have to settle for 1 more homemade letter. Wafflesaurus

49% waffle, 51% dinosaur, 100% skateboarder. This Eggo dinosaur is printed on a floppy rubber frisbee from 1992. I'm not sure if he is actually called a Wafflesaurus but it seems like he probably is. 

Robby Rabbit

Robby Rabbit is an uncommon Sanrio character first introduced in 1976. He seems to always chill with this bee dude but I can't ascertain if the bee has a name. I actually can't find much of any info on Robby himself; apparently he just wasn't cute enough to cut it next to Hello Kitty and her ilk. At any rate, Robby is doing a 1-footed wheelie on blue side of this coin purse. The red side finds him holding his board.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have taken their time getting on BPA, even though they have a plethora of skateboarding toys (Mikey did make a brief appearance in Mondo Gecko's 2nd appearance). Their BPA debut as the world's most fearsome fighting team comes in the form of a bandana from 1990. These guys look pretty much like the late-'80s cartoon versions. Blow up of the main graphic is below. Not sure why Leo and Donnie feel the need to skate with their weapons out. Check out the border graphic of skateboards.

Cup

I found this cup at a Goodwill a couple months ago. It's a generic cup that many restaurants have for kids. They always have some sort of hidden picture activity to keep the kids occupied or provide them something to fight over. In this case it's hidden balls, which is why he has a baseball on his tail and a tennis ball on his sole. He is pulling a pretty weird trick here; he looks like he might be in the middle of a fastplant but the speed lines imply that he is going backwards (hurricane fastplant?). Instead of a bike helmet he's got some sort of space-afro helmet going on. He's also throwing up the "I love you" sign for extra attitude.

Suburban Commando

The cover of 1991's Suburban Commando features a kid riding a mid-'80s deck. The kid doesn't actually skate at all in the movie but the Hulkster does. Early in the film, Hulk, newly arrived on Earth, is headbutted in the groin by a kid on a skateboard. He steps on the board immediately eats it. His rage is so great that he literally sends the board into orbit, to which a drunk bastard exclaims "Great strength, piss-ass balance." That really should've been the tagline of the movie. After he has saved the day the movie has one last thing to show us - Hulk teaching the snotty skaters that he knows how to thrash. He steals a kid's deck and performs a variety of impossible tricks. After breaking the bearings he gives the kid a 6-wheeled deck. I can't quite make out all the decks but it looks like they are mostly toy store decks with a couple large Powell Peralta stickers.

Skateboard Bandit

The Skateboard Bandit is a Ziploc brand pog featuring their mascot, a personified index finger known as Fingerman. Fingerman was Ziploc's mascot throughout much of the '90s, and as such was treated to certain accolades, such as gracing a series of pogs. Could Fingerman be the inspiration for the thumb-shaped Tech Deck Dudes? Probably not, but there is a certain resemblance. The last time pogs were featured on BPA was the Thrilla Gorilla series by Hawaiian Milkcaps.

Smurf Mug

The Smurfs make their 4th appearance on BPA with this mug featuring Smurfette and 2 unidentified Smurfs. This is Smurfette's 2nd appearance; she has previously appeared in figure form as part of the Surfin' Smurfs set. The mug is from 1990 and was made in France. It appears to be part of a set that includes various other sports. Other previous Smurf appearances include Skateboard Smurf with "Halfpipe" and Roll-Along Smurf.

EasyGlider

EasyGlider Skateboard Soap for Bath-Time "Hot Doggers" was made by Amway in 1979. It is a bar of soap in the shape of a deck complete with woodgrain top that sits on a plastic mount attached to wheels. The backside of the box has a marketing paragraph chock full of lingo, which they put in quotes to let you know these are terms and phrases that only the kids know.

The New Archies

I visited my In-Laws today and went through a big box of my wife's old comics. About 97% of these were Riverdale related, and a few of them had skateboard related covers. The best of the lot was this gem, issue no. 4 of The New Archies from 1988. This is apparently a tie-in for a "top rated" cartoon of the same name that ran for 1 season in 1987. It looks like the classic "kids" version of a show that is always terrible (with the obvious exception of The Muppet Babies). The cover features Reggie pulling a frontside air on a deck with mirrored griptape while a mulleted Archie looks on. They look like they are on a pretty nice doubles run though. Check out Jughead's sweet hot dog grip job in the background. Unfortunately there are no stories inside that feature skating.

Lego Skate Shop

The Lego skate shop brick came with the City Corner set (7641) which features a bus, pizza place, a bike shop and a skate shop. Below is a Lego self portrait.

Skate Zombie

More shirt graphics should have rails! This graphic was taken from a 1987 Valterra deck. I'm not exactly sure who made the shirt but they kept the '80s color scheme.

Radical Discharge

Radical Discharge is a crossover band from Baltimore, MD. Imagine a thrash-influenced version of the Mean Jeans who are more inspired by Johnny Utah than Ted Theodore Logan and you get a little idea of what is going on. The above graphic was used to advertise their debut LP release party (which I attended last night). Unfortunately, this is not the cover of their record nor is it a t-shirt graphic (at least not yet or not one they had for sale last night). In addition to their new LP they also have a 7" out, both on Wallride Records. Check 'em out here.
