Donald Duck II

Donald Duck makes his second appearance on BPA. This time in the form of a bendable figure from 1977. Donald is part of a three figure set that also included Mickey and Goofy. The figures are similar to the Action Animals but these are clearly higher quality. Donald's big feet make it easier to balance him in boneless action.

Edit: I ended up acquiring Donald in his original packaging. Check below for his original stance as well as suggested poses.

tiltWheel

Another 7" found on recent Richmond-Philly pilgrimage. This one comes from tiltWheel, a melodic Californian punk from the early '90s through the present. The dude pulling the sweeper on the cover seems to be a bit of a mascot, appearing on a bunch of album and EP covers. This 7" is a 2006 reissue of a 1998 EP with new and improved artwork (although the original had a photo of halfpipe on it).

Woody Woodpecker

This Woody Woodpecker figure is from Taco Bell circa 1999. It was made to promote The New Woody Woodpecker Show, which was an updated take on the classic series that ran from 1999 to 2002. After checking out a couple episodes online, it doesn't appear that they were going for a Poochie type update but this figure sure looks that way (he's still naked in the cartoon). The other toys were Mountainbike Woody, Street Luge Woody, Air Surfin' Woody and Wave Ridin' Woody. This one is officially titled "Skateboard Woody with Finger Board" and includes an instructional sheet with directions for a novice, intermediate and advanced trick.

McDonaldland Stickers

These four character stickers are from 2000 and feature the more well known inhabitants of McDonaldland (unfortunately no Fry Guys though). Birdie the Early Bird gets top billing here for multiple reasons, not the least of which is the ruling nature of breakfast in general. She is also the only one not rocking a bike helmet (or maybe her googles are just masking it). Aside from the helmets, this set is drawn pretty well, especially considering the last time Ronald appeared here he looked more like he was practicing Tai Chi than skating. Grimace looks about what you would expect a creature of his girth to look like on a board, which is actually a little less rad than his last appearance. Hamburglar looks like he is bombing a hill, which might be the only time it would not be a horrible idea to skate in a cape. It is also a good skill to have for a known criminal in a land with only one police officer.

Snuffleupagus

Aloysius Snuffleupagus and his baby sister Alice both skate. They also ride the same model board as Plucky Duck and the Roll-Along Smurf. I'm not quite sure when these figures are from, but Alice was not introduced until 1988 so it was sometime after that. Knowing how big Aloysius is compared to the humans who live on Sesame Street these boards must be enormous. The Snuffleupaguses are the third and fourth muppet related skaters to appear on BPA (after Baby Kermit and Cookie Monster).

Edit: found a source saying these are part of "rolling wheels" set released in the early 90s.

Razors Edge

This weekend I hit skateparks and record stores from Richmond to Philly and picked up a lot of skate punk. Razors Edge is a Japanese thrash band from the late '90s to present. This is a 2003 Swedish reissue of their debut 7" EP from 1998 (the original version has a red cover) and cannot be described as anything less than raging.

Belt Buckle III

This is a vintage belt buckle that is not too hard to track down. The skater is clearly wearing Adidas shoes but I do not think this was made by Adidas. There are no markings on the back. Judging by the size of the board, the shoes, and the striped socks I would guess this is from the late 70s.

Présilège

I can't quite figure out what this pin is advertising but I think it is some sort of French cheese, possibly a camembert. Regardless, this dude is pulling a pretty sweet backside lipslide on an early '90s deck.

Boarder Frank

In keeping with the primary goal here at BPA, I have tracked down yet another skateboarding hot dog. This is the first wiener that is skating nude (the previous two both have buns). This guy is the Boarder Frank from the Fantastic Franks line of figures put out in 2009 by Kid Stuff Marketing. The rest of the line is below on the insert card. The picture of Boarder Frank shows him with black gloves but the actual figure just has hot dog colored gloves.

Gordon Shumway

Gordon Shumway, or ALF as he is known on Earth, gives a well-reasoned and passionate speech while rolling backwards. This figure looks like someone took an ALF figure and just glued it on a toy skateboard, which is probably exactly what happened. The skateboard says "BULLY" on the bottom. It also has rear wheelwells.

Tom & Jerry

Tom & Jerry skating back in 1994 from Subway. They are billed as "Skateboard Tom" and "Skateboard Jerry" but the Tom figure is riding a scooter. The above image was taken after X-Acto surgery corrected Tom's poor judgement. The promo card that accompanied the figures clearly shows both Tom and Jerry on skateboards (and has added helpful labels in case you can't keep them straight). The back of the card teaches you about friendship, which seems pretty odd since Tom and Jerry are typically on the verge of killing each other. Even the episodes where that start with them being friends end up at near homicidal levels. These figures don't appear to be advertising any specific era of Tom and Jerry (the back of card reveals that you can "watch Tom & Jerry on TV" by checking your local listings). The blasphemous original figure of scooter Tom is below along with post-op pics.

ANS / Deadpoint

Texas skatepunks ANS have quite a few skate related covers. This one is a split 7" with the Japanese band Deadpoint. Both bands are pretty thrashin' and both have skate related songs: ANS performs "Skate Zombies Must Shred" while Deadpoint contributes "Skateboarding Ruined My Life." There are a couple covers to this split (the tour cover features the original Caballero dragon) but this is the only cover that features skateboarding. I'm not quite sure what is going on though - I think it is a skate zombie texas planting into a miniramp.

Chester Cheetah

Chester Cheetah is pushing hard and looking for a fix. My coworker is also addicted to cheese flavored snacks which is how I scored this 1 ounce bag. He's rocking his trademark sunglasses and huge white kicks and has also donned the proper protective gear for skating through a barrage of Cheetos.

Punchy

How about some nice Hawaiian Punch? Punchy is seen here rolling with humungous shoes as an iron-on transfer. Unfortunately it is only 4" x 5" which makes for a pretty small T-shirt graphic.
